INFLUENCE OF ANTHROPOGENIC ACTIVITIES IN FLOOD DYNAMICS IN YOLA NORTH, ADAMAWA STATE
Flooding is a major global hazard that poses severe threat to human lives, infrastructure, and the economy. With increasing extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, effective flood management strategies are more important than ever. However, human activities significantly contribute to flood risks, yet these factors are often not fully integrated into conventional flood dynamics and control models. This study aims to identify key human behaviors influencing flood dynamics and develop a comprehensive modelling framework that includes anthropogenic impacts on flooding. A log-linear regression model was performed using the Rational Model based on basin area and rainfall intensity, utilizing data spanning over a period of 30 years (1993�2023). Land use changes and urbanization were modelled using Rational model. Runoff coefficient for Yola was calculated as 0.668. The model was validated using observed runoff data. Result showed significant slope coefficients closely aligning with expected values (beta1 =0.938), (beta2 = 0.839); p < 0.001). The model demonstrated high predictive accuracy (R� = 0.944). The findings further indicate that human activities like urbanization and land-use changes significantly impact flood risks. Regular assessment of behaviors affecting flood vulnerability, using the model to inform policy decisions, ongoing validation with updated data, and community education to enhance flood preparedness and resilience were suggested.
