SUITABILITY SITE SELECTION FOR CATTLE RANCH IN GIREI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ADAMAWA STATE USING GEOSPATIAL TECHNIQUES

The study aims at selecting site suitable for cattle ranch location within Girei Local Government Area, Adamawa states using remote sensing technique with GIS as a platform for evaluation. Various dataset collected and process to determine these areas are as follows: the land use and land cover, slope, soil type, water source, rainfall, residential areas and road network. Which amongst them serve as a criteria and constraint which are weighted by Analytical Hierarchical Process for the Multicriteria evaluation in a GIS environment in producing final suitability map. The result shows that 24% of the total area (28937 Ha) is highly suitable, 67% (80364 Ha) is moderately suitable, 7% (7809 Ha) is less suitable and 2% (1902 Ha) of the total area under consideration is not suitable for sitting cattle ranch. The finding indicates that areas with abundant availability of grasslands, water source, rainfall, flat of gentle slope, are highly suitable. North-eastern part of Girei Local Government was found to be suitable locations for establishing cattle ranches. Also, the study shows that GIS-based Multicriteria evaluation provides a great advantage to analyze multiple layers of data spatially and quantitatively to technically identify suitable land and good cattle ranch development. It also shows that without biased, decision-making on-site suitability using Analytical Hierarchical Processes powerful regarding those factors and constraint. It is recommended that for the success of cattle ranch establishment development, maintenance and employment opportunities for people around the area of study or beyond to be created.
