THE EFFECTS OF ON-SITE SANITATION FACILITIES ON GROUNDWATER POLLUTION IN JAMBUTU, YOLA, NIGERIA
Open defecation is becoming a growing problem in Jambutu; as such the study was aimed at investigating the effects of on-site sanitation system (OSS) facilities on groundwater pollution in Jambutu, perennially flooded area. This was achieved through investigating pH, TDS, TSS, EC, DO, Cl-, No3-, No2-, NH3, K, P, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr6+, Co, TCC, FCC, and E.coli of boreholes water in the study area in both dry and rainy seasons and compared with standard guidelines for drinking water quality. Correlation analysis of mean distance (23.482 m) of water source from OSS with the results from the investigation of the selected water quality parameters revealed positive correlations with TC (0.0290, 0.1103), FC (0.1412, 0.3575) E.coli (0.1817, 0.5731) for dry and rainy seasons respectively and negative correlations with pH (-0.6348) in rainy season, TDS (-0.4378, -0.4768), TSS (-0.2158, -0.4291) and NH3 (-0.7811, -0.5353) for dry and rainy seasons respectively, Cl- (-0.7665), Cu (-0.3407), No3- (-0.0417) and K (-0.2133) for dry season. The positive correlations of some water quality parameters with mean distance could be attributed to leachates from OSS as a result of perennial flash floods in the area. Further research should be carried out in the area to determine safe borehole depth, design of OSS structures for flood prone areas like Jambutu and design of centralised conventional sewerage system as a new sanitation method to ensure safe portable water.
