SORPTION CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTAMINANTS IN COMPACTED GRANITE RESIDUAL SOIL - PALM OIL FUEL ASH MIXTURE
Granite residual soil mixed with 0 to 15% palm oil fuel ash (POFA) by dry weight was investigated to ascertain its sorption characteristics with regards to its suitability as hydraulic barrier in sanitary landfill. A batch equilibrium adsorption test (BEAT) was carried out in which the effect of dosage and ionic concentration (pH) on the adsorption capacity of granite residual soil â€“ POFA mixture was determined. The results showed that the highest percentage removal (15% POFA content) of the metals concentration with respect to the initial concentration were Zinc (22%) Lead (51%), Magnesium (41%), Chromium (22%), and Iron (43%). With lead having the highest percentage removal of 51%. Furthermore, the results showed adsorbent dosage and pH had significant effect on the sorption capacity of the soil â€“ POFA mixture. The optimum POFA content and pH values were 15% and 6 respectively. It can be inferred that the adsorbent is an economical product for metal ion remediation from water and wastewater.
